Contention: United Nations starships (Final)

Description

So with the other human factions having their ships fleshed out a bit I figured it would be nice to throw together an updated UNC ships picture as well. The UNC (United Nations Conjunction) is the most powerful and largest human faction in the Contention story, and will be the main focus of the books in their fight against the Exohuman race. While not exactly having the largest fleet (that accomplishment belongs to the Allied Confederation), the UN by far has the most advanced and strongest ships. On average, UN ships can take on twice their number of either AC or UR ships, reports of UNC fleets of just 50-60 ships obliterating fleets of 100 AC ships were actually quite commonplace during the fairly recent factions War, and it usually took a massive fleet of the other factions to even stand equal against the UN. Although currently the UNC is trying to get used to fighting the Exohumans, who are on a technologically even level.

UN ships have several massive advantages over the ships of the AC and UR. The first being their starship armor plating called "Vinculum" (Latin for a bond or link), and is made of a very advanced combination of metals that are immensely strengthened at the molecular level. This armor is highly resistant against kinetic impacts and heat, making them very difficult to damage. Their second major advantage is the "Shock cannon", an antimatter/plasma based weapon that causes horrific damage to starships, even the weakest variant of shock cannon is rated in the double-digit megaton rang. Using a combination of intense heat and incredible physical force, shock cannons allow UN ships to rip into enemy ships while soaking up damage. The last major advantage is their FTL capabilities. UN ships utilize the D.M.W. drive (Dark Matter Warp) which grants them faster FTL speeds compared to the other factions (UN ships have a max of 5 light years per 10 Earth hours, AC and UR have a max of 3.5 ly per 10 E.H.). In addition to UN ships being faster overall, their dominance over the other factions is guaranteed for a long time to come.
UNC ships are designed to have a perfect balance of toughness, speed, and maneuverability. The aesthetic look of their ships are usually recognized with solid powerful frames, large outstretching wings that serve both as extra armor to the sides and as extra mounting ports for weapon systems, curved edges and interesting mixed shapes. UN vessels are also by far the largest out of all human factions, outclassing the others substantially.

Witnessing the UNC fleet in action is said to be a spectacle to behold. They fight organized, never breaking from their positions unless commanded to and attacking seemingly without fear, constantly putting pressure on their enemy. Their combat pattern follows specific line up: heavy/light Frigates, destroyers, heavy cruisers and battlecruisers make up the initial frontline forces, while light cruisers, battleships and carriers stay in the back to offer long range support, protected by mostly light frigates. UN ships utilize a "missile barrage" tactic frequently, pounding enemy ships from long-medium range with walls of thermonuclear missiles. This tactic scatters and damages the enemy fleet, allowing the UN to hammer them with shock cannon fire. The late Confederation naval commander Peter Elison made a well known statement to Confederation news sources about combating UNC ships at the start of the factions war:
"The first time my fleet flew in battle against the UN was also the most frightened I've ever been in my entire life. I'll never forget that first exchange of fire. We fired first, saw our railgun shells impacting against their ships. 75 of my ships vs. 46 of theirs and we barely made a dent in that first volley. I literally could see some of our shots deflecting off their armor, but the worst part was when the UN returned fire. Bright blue globes of energy streaking towards us, impacting with such force that one hit made my entire ship shake. I could see half of my fleet blaring their alert alarms from the damage, then it started. Ships being wiped off my monitors by the second, one by one they fell. Within a couple minutes we'd already lost almost half the fleet, burning wrecks doomed to float throughout the blackness of space for eternity. We hadn't even destroyed 10 of their ships yet, i had no choice but to sound the retreat. If we stayed there we would've all been dead within another few minutes. It's going to take our fleet some real miracles to stand a fair chance".
* Commander Elison would later perish in early 2337 defending the AC colony of Tieras, the colony would eventually fall to the UN within 4 weeks of occupation and the AC would lose 114 ships attempting to defend it.

Something tells me this is in a reality where FTL drives don't sound like Star Trek and don't turn your ship to pure light.

Typically your other options would be hyperdrive engines (Star Wars had some good science.) or jump gates (Very popular as well, but are no more then an expensive stationary version of the same tech)
